Spotlight On NEMPA Member Lawrence Ulrich, Content Creator for Car and Driver, Road & Track, Robb Report, Motor1, and Many Other Premier Publications

The New England Motor Press Association (NEMPA) is made up of a very diverse group of writers, videographers, photographers, social media influencers, and many members who are all of the above. In this spotlight, we’ll showcase NEMPA member Lawrence Ulrich. Among our team, he is known for his writing and his ability to convey to a reader the fantastic experience of driving a supercar. Frankly, Lawrence is also at the top of our industry for his factual, insightful journalism, making him a uniquely well-rounded automotive content creator.

During 2025, Lawrence tested the very best cutting-edge supercars and hypercars from such manufacturers as McLaren, Ferrari, Maserati, and Chevrolet. Manufacturers trust these amazing machines in Lawrence’s hands on public roads and racetracks alike. Few automotive media members possess his level of ability in driving or writing. In addition to the newest exotic cars, during 2025, Lawrence was tapped to drive a priceless vintage air-cooled Porsche 911 battery-electric vehicle (not a typo), along with one of the very few remaining mint Volvo 850 Turbo wagons. Lawrence is no stranger to high-performance battery-electric performance machines. Lucid looked to Lawrence for a test and review late in 2025, and during the year, Lawrence was supplied with such amazing EVs as the Hyundai Ioniq 5N and Dodge Challenger Daytona via the Automotion fleet serving NEMPA.

Here is a quick look at just some of the top-tier publications in which NEMPA member Lawrence Ulrich’s work appeared:
Robb Report: Road Test: The New Corvette ZR1 Bests European Rivals With True Hypercar Performance
Excellence The Magazine About Porsche: Electric Outlaw
An air-cooled 911 is reborn as a stealthy, high-performance EV by Sacrilege Motors

Road&Track: The Delayed Range Rover EV Deserves to Come In from the Cold
The New York Times: Is Slate Auto’s Electric Truck the Answer to Expensive Cars?
Autoblog: Ferrari 296 GTB First Drive Review | Design and technical showpiece
Car and Driver: These Daily-Driver Ferraris Together Have More Than 600,000 Miles

In addition to testing and reporting on interesting and exciting high-end vehicles, Lawrence also dove deeply into news, particularly news related to green vehicles and EVs. His work appeared at Inside EVs, IEEE Spectrum, and SAE International’s magazine, Automotive Engineering.

Lawrence’s depth of knowledge of green vehicles is almost unparalleled in the automotive media space. Which writer could more honestly start a story this way?

Aside from having four wheels, it’s hard to see what a US $30,000 Toyota Camry has in common with a $3 million Ferrari F80. But these market bookends are examples of an under-the-radar tech revolution. From budget transportation to hypercars, every category of internal-combustion car is now harnessing hybrid tech.

Lawrence’s work appears in English in the United States and the UK, and his 2025 work also appeared in Portuguese, Spanish, German, and Italian in nations where those are the primary languages. New England is NEMPA’s home base, but its membership provides content to the globe.

We asked Lawrence to tell us which mainstream vehicles stood out that he was able to test this past year. After thinking it over, Lawrence told us, “Three Nissans jump to mind. The new Leaf is amazing. It’s less expensive than its first generation and has hundreds of miles more range. The new Sentra impressed me, too. Both are affordable, great vehicles. Overall, the Nissan Armada surprised me the most. Its dynamics are so much better than some of its peers, and you’d never know that unless you had time with the vehicle.”

When we asked Lawrence which of the performance cars were most impressive, he didn’t hesitate. “It’s the Corvette. You look at this car, and it means something that it came from Chevy, came from GM.”

It’s easy for us to call Lawrence a “rock star” in our industry. That may be due in part to his previous career, which was, rock star. He played keyboard in Detroit-based bands for a living before breaking into journalism.

Our thanks to Lawrence for allowing us to make him the first of our NEMPA member spotlights.
